Afars And Issas Link

Formerly known as French Somaliland, the territory was renamed in 1967 following a referendum. The new name was a strategic move by the French administration to acknowledge the two main ethnic groups—the Afars and the Issas (a Somali sub-clan)—while distancing the colony from the newly independent Somali Republic.

On June 27, 1977 , the territory officially gained independence from France and became the Republic of Djibouti .
