The narrative centers on John "Scottie" Ferguson, a retired San Francisco detective played by James Stewart . Scottie's career ends after a rooftop chase results in a fellow officer's death, leaving him with a crippling fear of heights (acrophobia) and vertigo. He is hired by an old acquaintance, Gavin Elster, to shadow Elster's wife, Madeleine, who appears to be possessed by the spirit of her ancestor, Carlotta Valdes.

As Scottie follows Madeleine, he becomes deeply obsessed with her, leading to a tragic sequence of events where he fails to save her from a fatal fall from a bell tower. Later, he encounters Judy Barton, a woman who bears a striking resemblance to the late Madeleine. Scottie's obsession shifts toward transforming Judy into his idealized image of Madeleine, only to eventually uncover a sinister murder plot. “Vertigo” the Film by Alfred Hitchcock Essay - IvyPanda
